Credit Report
The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act), which passed into law in December of 2003, contains some important provisions designed to help consumers prevent and detect identity theft.
What you need to know?
- You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from the 3 major credit bureaus each year.
- It's a good idea to review your credit reports annually, to check for errors and fraudulent activity.
- People living in the western U.S. became eligible for free credit reports in December, 2004. The rest of the country is being phased in gradually.
- The credit bureaus have set up a web site with all the pertinent information: www.annualcreditreport.com.
- Many companies which advertise "free credit reports" online are actually selling other services.
- The FACT Act includes other provisions for dealing with fraud alerts, medical information privacy, workplace investigations and a variety of consumer issues.
