AMALGAMATED CREDIT UNION
“Serving Your Community”
June 30, 2006
RETIRING SOON? – If you are retiring soon and have a loan at the credit union with disability coverage, you may need to cancel this coverage unless you are getting another job.The coverage is only good while employed.
SPECIAL RETIREMENT SEMINARS – We, along with Edward Jones Investments, will be sponsoring some seminars to discuss the retirement buyouts, the buyout checks, debt at retirement, etc.At the time of printing of this newsletter, we have on session scheduled at the UAW Local 455 Hall at 110 Florence St. on July 26th at noon. Please RSVP at 792-3007 as seating is limited. We are trying to schedule a meeting at the UAW Local 467 Hall at 2104 Farmer St. in the evening during the same week.Notices will be posted at each credit union location as soon as details are finalized.
MASTERCARD PAYMENTS – You can make your MasterCard payment at any of the four credit union offices, so if you’re near an office, save a stamp and mailing time.
INCREASED CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT RATES – The rates on Certificates of Deposit have grown and will probably continue to grow as the Fed uses its authority to raise rates in an attempt to control inflation.Check our rates often and invest in the credit union where your money is safe.
HOME EQUITY LENDING – We are constantly improving our lending process and have now developed a fast and easy Home Equity Loan Program. The Home Equity loans are currently one of the most popular types of loans members are requesting.Whether it is for Spring fix-ups around the house or the utilization of equity in your home to buy a vehicle, remember your credit union.
PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY – Be sure that you only provide your identity to those people you want to have it.Scams are occurring on a daily basis and while your credit union has many methods and devices in place to catch fraud, your assistance is required. The actions of alerts tellers recently caught two attempts at defrauding the credit union with one individual being detained by law enforcement.Don’t provide your personal account information to anyone. The personnel of the credit union will never call and ask you to verify account numbers. The credit union may, as required by law, request that you provide information to our auditing firm for verification, but this will always be done by mail and with notification being provided to the member.
HOLIDAY CLOSINGS – The credit union will be closed on Tuesday, July 4th in observance of Independence Day holiday. The credit union will also be closed on Monday, Sept. 4th in observance of Labor Day.
THE FASTEST GROWING SERVICE AT YOUR CREDIT UNION – Computer access to your accounts from home or on the road is the most popular method of account access and grows in usage every day.The system has many security devices in place to thwart fraudulent usage.Sign up at the credit union to enjoy this easy and convenient method of attaining balances, balancing your checkbook, and transferring funds. The second fastest growing service is the Debit card. The Debit card is used like a check or ATM card, saving time and eliminating another paper item containing your personal information.
RELAY FOR LIFE – Your credit union participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event held on June 24th and 25th at Ojibway Island. The fight against cancer is an ongoing battle as cancer has touched so many lives. We held a car wash on June 10th at the Shattuck Rd. office as one of our fundraisers. We also sold candy bars throughout the year to help raise funds. With your assistance, we were able to raise over $2,600 and served as the deposit headquarters for this area’s event.
INDIVIDUAL RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS – Are you planning your own retirement, or are trusting on your workplace to provide a secure pension? It may be in your best interest to invest in an IRA, either Traditional or Roth, to build a secure retirement savings account. It appears that as each day passes we read about the failure of pension funds, we have the fear of a failing Social Security system, and yet many of us fail to invest into our own futures by saving in IRA’s.Break away from reliance on others and begin saving a few dollars weekly to build up a healthy retirement balance.
VISA CARD HOLDERS – Members holding a SAEFCU Visa that was transferred to an Amalgamated Credit Union MasterCard during the interest promotion period may notice that the interest rate did not transfer correctly. We are aware of the problem and have begun correcting all incorrectly transferred interest rates. If you have any questions regarding this correction, contact Donna at 792-0026.

A Monthly Publication of Amalgamated Credit Union

WELCOME TO THE NEWLY EXPANDED CREDIT UNION – During this past weekend, your credit union staff worked diligently to convert data from the Saginaw Automotive Employees CU data processing system to the Amalgamated CU data processing system. While we believe all data transferred properly, we ask that you check your account statements closely now and for the next few cycles to ensure that all transactions and transfers are occurring properly. Now that the data processing systems have been combined, members are welcome to use any of our four locations, 5685 Shattuck Rd., 1606 King St., 4686 Fashion Square Blvd. and 2513 E. Genesee.Staff members will be relocated so a familiar face should be at any of the office you decide to visit.Drive up service and ATM’s are available at the Shattuck Rd. and King St. locations. We will be studying the addition of drive up service at the other locations during the next year.Your Board of Directors is positioning the credit union for growth in membership, service quality and services offered, please tell your friends, relatives and neighbors that Amalgamated Credit Union is here to serve them.
ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTIONS – The Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at 110 Florence St., Saginaw, MI48602, beginning at 10:00 AM.The Nominations Committee has nominated Dr. Nicholas Paron, M.D., L. Lupe Juarez and Larry Campbell. No nomination petitions were receive, so these individuals will be elected at the meeting.
HOME EQUITY LOANS – We have developed a quick and easy home-equity lending program that is now in operation. This allows for almost immediate closing of qualified home-equity loans. If you are getting ready for those mid-winter “fix-ups”, check with ACU for convenient loans.
“PHISHING” AND PROTECTING YOUR IDENTITY – “Phishing” is not a leisurely week-end activity but rather a term now being utilized for attempting to gather a persons personal information for illegal purposes.Use extreme caution when you receive unsolicited requests for personal information. If you suspect a caller is not legitimate, before you give any information, get a call back number, verify that number in the telephone book, then call back, but still proceed with caution.Identity theft is a rising problem and takes hours and hours of personal time to try to get corrected.Remember to protect your identity.Don’t provide your personal account information to anyone you don’t want to have access to this information.Recently, there have been a number of requests for verification of information being made through computer programs.Your credit union will not request this type of verification by computer. You are usually safer to call the institution yourself, rather than the institution calling you, so you know that the party on the other end is actually who you want to speak with. Also, when possible, use a corded phone, not a cordless or cell-phone.
HOLIDAY CLOSINGS – The offices will not be closed for any holidays during the next quarter.
HOME BANKING – Have you used c u anywhere, our “home banking” system, a great convenience and time saver?Members are able to check balances, transfer funds to savings or checking accounts or to loans, balance checking accounts anytime during the month and even receive statements through the system rather than waiting for mail delivery. There is no cost to use c u anywhere. This system has also recently undergone some modification to make the process of transferring funds much simpler and quicker. If you utilized the home banking system at SAEFCU, you will need to contact ACU to get access to the system. The same is true for the MAXXAR, voice response system at SAEFCU.You will need to re-establish access through ACU.
MANAGING YOUR CREDIT AND DEBTS – There’s more to a loan than just signing a piece of paper, just as there’s more to credit than swiping your card at the local store.Stay informed about a variety of topics – including the importance of your credit history, debt collection practices, and what happens when you co-sign a loan – all at the Loan & Credit Management channel of our Financial Resource Center.Visit the Loan & Credit Management channel of our FinancialResourceCenter at www.amalcu.org today.
